Israeli forces continued killing Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank over the weekend and into Tuesday. The latest media reports show that there is no cease-fire in Gaza but a campaign of Israeli violence that is continuing under a diplomatic cover provided by the US administration of Donald Trump since October.
Al Jazeera’s latest reporting describes repeated Israeli attacks across Gaza, including strikes on the Mawasi area of Khan Younis, tent encampments, homes and other civilian sites. One report said an attack on the Mawasi camp killed several people, including a mother and her child, while another said two people were killed and hundreds displaced in a strike that set tents ablaze.
Earlier Al Jazeera coverage also described a family, including two daughters, killed in Israeli strikes, showing that the violence continues to target civilians in their homes or shelters.
The Gaza Health Ministry’s latest reported figure says that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since the cease-fire announcement. This number shatters the fiction that Trump’s agreement ended the war. The total number of Palestinian deaths, most of whom are civilians, has surpassed 73,000.
Reporting on the continuing Israeli assault emphasizes the absence of warning and the civilian nature of the victims. In one account, an eyewitness said a man who was killed in a vehicle strike “had nothing to do with anyone” and described lifting pieces of his skull and flesh from the ground. This is a direct description of what Israeli fire leaves behind in Gaza, where rescue often means trying to gather body parts rather than saving the wounded.
Another report described attacks on humanitarian zone tents, showing that even the areas labeled as safe zones are being hit. Al Jazeera’s coverage of the June 25 killings in Gaza and the West Bank said the deaths came amid escalating military raids and settler attacks across the occupied territories.
Al Jazeera also reported that Israeli forces shot and killed Palestinians in the occupied West Bank as part of a wider escalation that includes raids, settler attacks and incursions into refugee camps. A video report on Tuesday said the assault on the West Bank has killed at least 30 Palestinians, including a 14-year-old boy shot dead by an Israeli sniper in Tulkarem.
The same report described gunfire during the Israeli withdrawal and return, along with significant destruction of infrastructure in the refugee camp. That report also said a Palestinian boy was heading to the mosque with his father when he was struck in the neck by a sniper’s bullet, and his father was wounded in the abdomen.
On Tuesday, NBC News reported about a 3-year-old Palestinian boy killed while in his father’s arms. The report said Bahaa Abu al-Ajeen was walking his son, Rayan, back to a shack they called home in “what was designated as a safe area for civilians close to the ‘yellow line,’ a boundary marked with yellow blocks and flags that divides Palestinian-controlled parts of the Gaza Strip from areas under Israeli military control. But al-Ajeen, 38, said that, as they were confronted by Israeli soldiers, he froze.”
Al-Ajeen said, “At that moment, I did not know whether to move forward or backward,” so he picked up his son and began walking again. The Israeli fired on him anyway in what the military later claimed were “warning” shots, the third of which struck Rayan in the head. “After that, they shot at me, as well,” al-Ajeen told NBC News from al-Aqsa Hospital on June 15.
Israeli officials are now openly discussing permanent control, population transfer and renewed settlement activity. The Jerusalem Post reported that Netanyahu said, “voluntary migration” from Gaza remained on the table while he refused to rule out Jewish settlements there, adding: “The question is whether you prefer to do or to talk.”
The Post also reported that earlier discussions about Gaza migration involved the Mossad, and officials were exploring mechanisms to push Palestinians out “voluntarily,” although the paper described the plan as unresolved and contested inside the Israeli system.
Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said plans for three settlements in northern Gaza had already been completed and were awaiting Netanyahu’s approval. This demonstrates that the goal of the Gaza genocide operation is expansion of settlements and permanent annexation.
Al Jazeera’s report on Tuesday says Israel is accelerating land grabs in both Gaza and the West Bank and points to permanent alterations around Hebron’s Ibrahimi Mosque. Earlier coverage described “quiet annexation” becoming louder, with settler attacks, confiscations and policy changes making occupation harder and more irreversible. The report also said Israel is deepening annexations in the West Bank by normalizing land seizure and settlement expansion.
These reports show that Gaza and the West Bank are part of the same colonial project. The genocide against the Palestinians is paired with administrative and political measures designed to permanently change the land.
On Monday, The Economist reported that Trump’s much-vaunted Gaza plan has “little to show for itself.” According to the magazine, Israel still occupies most of the strip, while reconstruction has not started. That is a blunt admission that the US-backed diplomatic framework has not resulted in any peace at all.
The collapse of Trump’s plan exposes the emptiness of the public narrative about a “cease-fire” and “peace.” If thousands remain displaced, Israeli forces keep killing, and Israeli leaders keep discussing migration and settlements, then the cease-fire functions as a political cover for the ongoing genocide.
The same pattern is visible in the region, where declarations of a “cease-fire” and a Memorandum of Understanding coexist with ongoing imperialist missile strikes and threats of annihilation. In both Iran and Lebanon, Trump and Netanyahu have used the same modus operandi as that which exists in Gaza, where persistent imperialist violations of the “peace deal” are justified and blamed on those who are the target of their illegal and aggressive wars of conquest.
